Whiteman AFB Missouri - Heritage Air Park 2018
Whiteman AFB MO, is famous the world over for being home to the United States Air Force fleet of Stealth Bombers known as the B-2 "Spirit", under the command of the 509th Bomb Wing (BW). Pilots are kept mission ready and qualified for the B-2, flying the T-38C "Talon" with the 394th Combat Training Squadron (CTS). Also sharing Whiteman are the A-10s "Thunderbolts" of the 442nd Fighter Wing (FW) a Reserve Squadron with the USAF and finally are the Missouri Army National Guard, with the 1-135th Assault Helicopter Battalion (AHB) flying the UH-60 "Blackhawk".
A very varied mix of aircraft types stationed upon Whiteman AFB.
To reflect the diverse history of Whiteman AFB many historical aircraft types are displayed along a 800m length of grass that are set back from the main flightline. Allowing for photography and walking the 800m, it takes approximately 1 hour for a small group of 6-8 people to cover this area.
These very well preserved aircraft types are set well back into the base and most are not viewable from outside, although a few more older aircraft (not featured in this article) are displayed at many of the bases entrance gates and are viewable for photography, it may be best to ask at each gate before taking any photos, as we all know base entrances and the area around them are deemed as sensitive by all military bases around the world. To visit the historical aircraft it may be best to ask when Whiteman hold their Airshows, although the area is not normally open to the public, sometimes a friendly guard may allow access for photography, remember due to the sensitive nature of Whiteman AFB missions, permission may be a lot more difficult than most bases to visit the Heritage Air Park.
