M&A - Vance AFB air park collection - Enid Oklahoma - 2019

Vance AFB  - Enid Oklahoma
2019

Located North of Oklahoma City, Vance Air Force Base (AFB) is home to the 71st Flight Training Wing (FTW) and home to over 3000 military and civilian employees all assigned to the Air Education and Training Command (AETC). The base is named after local World War II hero and Medal of Honour recipient, Lieutenant Colonel Leon Robert Vance Jr.

Construction began in July 1941 for a cost of $4,034,583 and it wasn't until 1942 that the base was officially named Enid Army Flying School, also known as Woodring Field. It was officially activated in February of 1942 and as the demand for pilots decreased with the end of the war in Europe, the Enid Army Flying Field was deactivated in July of 1945.

The base was reactivated in January of 1948 and its name changed to Enid Air Force Base (AFB), changing on the 9th July to its present name and has been in operation ever since. Situated at the main base gate, next to the "Pass and Tag" office is a small airpark with an excellent representation of the training types once operated from the base. These aircraft are in excellent condition and are maintained in a well presented display location which affords good photographic opportunities, so if you are visiting the town of Enid, or happen to be going to the AFB, add another 15 minutes on to your visit time for a few snaps of these lovely preserved aircraft types.
