Located about 30km South East of Kagoshima, Japan and located adjacent to JMSDF Kanoya, this relatively small but attractive museum can be reached by coach from Kagoshima Airport or by car. Opened in 1972 and rehoused in parkland in the 1990s, it displays the unique surviving H8K2 flying boat, previously housed in Norfolk, Virginia and in Tokyo, amongst its collection.
Also of interest is a more modern US-1 Shin Meiwa flying boat, both piston and turbine engine P-2V Neptune’s and inside the museum a composite A6M Reisen (made from 2 wrecks) along with memorabilia from Kamikaze pilots, whose stories are attempted to be told.
Previously free and open from 09.00 to 16.30 daily. My visit was in 2014 and although unchanged since, I would not be too surprised to see a P-3 Orion there before long.
